Matt Tomaszewski is emerging as one of Australia's busiest
and brightest young directors and story tellers. Having
worked on a diverse range of domestic and particularly
international projects Matt combines an artistic visual
approach with a scientific understanding to generate a
unique and clear perspective of the world around us.
An environmental scientist by training, Matt turned his
hand to film making through a genuine desire to contribute.
He is an expert of nature, the sea and of romance.
Matt's current projects include directing and writing a
documentary on the construction of the Sydney Opera House
for Discovery Channel, supervising another documentary on
the changing face of Macau (also for Discovery), co-writing
a feature film (to be shot in April); working on his first
novel ('Forty Cows') as well as developing several other
screen plays, documentaries and stories at various stages of
development.
Recently Matt directed 2 films for the international
'Live Earth' event, both of which were broadcast to 2
billion people in July 2007 and continue to screen as
education packages and at various international festivals
and events. Matt was the only Australian director selected
by Live Earth co-ordinators.
Matt has produced and written for the most successful
weekly TV show in Australia's history (access series -
Border Security), directed and written the highest rating
program in Taiwan's history (a documentary on the infamous
Hseushan tunnel) and has written, directed and supervised
multiple international documentaries on a range of subjects
as well as numerous TV series and pilots. Matt has worked
extensively throughout the world including much of Asia.
His first independent production Reef Route 66 - a study
of the life cycle of coral reefs in the face of climate
change received a finalist award at the Jackson Hole
International Wildlife Film Festival in 2005. Other projects
such as 'COTS the Monster from the Shallows' and 'Taipei
101' also received international awards and nominations.
Prior to Directing and Writing, Matt was a reporter for
leading international science and environmental TV shows
'Beyond 2000' (for Discovery) and 'Next Wave' (for National
Geographic); as well doing time as a freelance PA and AD in
the film industry, writing magazine articles and working as
an environmental consultant. He is a fanatical surfer and
highly accomplished yachtsman.
Matt is renowned for being a friendly and diplomatic
character with an unflappable demeanour and a visual, honest
and optimistic style. He sees patterns in human behaviour
and the natural world that bypass most and has a honed
ability to distil complex information, to see through
problems and to make people fell calm and at ease.
The movements of nature and the foibles of humanity and
society are central to his perspective, ethic and approach.
He is passionate about equality, injustice and the future.
Matt lives near the sea in Sydney with his wife, Phionna
and their two children, Maris and Yul. He sees the media as
a powerful and precious tool for the future and aims to keep
writing stories and making films and documentaries that
enlighten, entertain and above all inspire.
